Unnamed Dragon Species
These dragons are highly spiritual, and a bit superstitious. Meat-eaters and accompolished hunters, they are not scaled like normal dragons, but rather covered in thick, but short silky fur. Their paws are very catlike, and they have soft pawpads. Their tails are long and very muscular.
Most have feline markings, stripes and spots being the most common. Generally found in natural colors. Any natural color can be found on one of these. Unatural colors are extremely rare; though can be added with magic. Most often, un-natural colors are present in small amounts.
Eyes can be any color.
Huge wings provide lots of lift. Their muscular tail is often used as a weapon. They are muscular and strong, but very lean.
They are not born able to take human form. This is learned later in their life, and not all are capable of it.
They are very spiritual in their beliefs. When a family member or mate dies, the skull will be fused to their head with a powerful spell. It becomes a part of them, the dragon's original horns joining the horns of the dragon they fused with,
They do this because they believe that the spirit lives on in the skull, and wear the skull to help their loved one live on within them. The skull does have magical properties, and the ghost of the dead dragon helps the still living dragon out throughout their lives. The ghosts often appear as soft, glowing orbs flitting in and out of sight around the dragon. They are usually soft blue in color, and can take on the appearance of a ghostly dragon if needed. They remain with their loved one for their loved one's life, at which point both move on. When the spirit has moved on, the skull will turn to dust.
Their entire body turns to dust soon after death; leaving only the skeleton. Once the spirit moves on this, too, will turn to dust.
Once the spell fuses the skull with the dragon, it grows with them; it literally becomes a part of their body and they can not take it off. So this is not taken lightly. The ghost is bonded to them for the extent of their life. It provides wisdom, energy, protection, and companionship. When one's loved one is lost, they are not truly gone.
Taking the skull of a deceased dragon will incite the rage of their closest relative. It is considered the utmost shame to steal the skull of a dead dragon. Dragons who steal the skulls, and therefore the ghosts, of other dragons against their will are cast out. Only a very evil dragon will do this.
The power of the dead one combines with the power of the living one once fused; For this reason some of these dragons go corrupt will kill and steal the skulls of living dragons; They wear them almost like an armor, since the spell can change the size and shape of the skull.
They have as many orbs as skulls they have stolen, and these orbs take on a blood red color. They have all free will taken away, and are nothing more then additions to the corrupted dragon, Killing the corrupted dragon frees the spirits; they will then turn on the spirit of their captor, and destroy it complete before moving on. At this point all the skulls turn to dust.
The species is generally peaceful towards other sentient races; though are distrustful of humans; since humans have hunted them for centuries. If you managed to befriend one, they make loyal friends. They are kind and compassionate and caring; and most will not eat sentient races.
Their blood has healing properties.
Their skeletons are naturally black; the skulls are sometimes changed to white with magic to fit the color scheme of the dragon they fuse with.
Males usually have longer manes and are a bit larger then females. They also have larger, and more horns. The older the dragon, the more sets of horns they have. Some very ancient ones can have an entire frill of horns. They have VERY long lives, living thousands of years; as such they breed very slowly.
They mate for life.
They can breathe fire. Usually blue in color. Evil ones fire is red.
They rarely EVER mate out of their own species. They can breed with other dragons, and with humanoids if they have a human form.
They are very family oriented and have a code of honor. One who breaks this code is cast out. Severe offenses end with the tip of the tail being cut off - so that their pride, the long tuft at the end, can no longer grow.
Those who murder are punished by death - unless they escape.
They are very reserved sexually.
Their favorite meal would be deer, and other large animals. They are omnivorous, so will eat fruits, vegetables, and some other plants on occasion.
